Throughout May and June, dentists across the UK are joining forces with other healthcare professionals and educational organisations to celebrate National Smile Month 2019. The annual awareness campaign has now been running for over 40 years and this year takes place from 13th May to 13th June. It is supported by dentists, schools, pharmacies, community groups and others are all working hard to promote healthy teeth for life.
Although National Smile Month itself only lasts a month, at the heart of the annual campaign is a key message that matters all year round – it is never too late to make positive changes to give your family’s teeth the best chance and help keep them for life.
What is National Smile Month?
Organised and run by a leading UK oral health charity The Oral Health Foundation, the objective of National Smile Month is to raise awareness of important health issue and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions, both in the UK and around the world.
With the support of dentists, dental practices and healthcare professionals throughout the UK, National Smile Month strives to engage communities and emphasise three key messages, which together can go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth. These are:
- Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Reduce the amount of sugary foods and drinks you consume.
- Get regular dental checkups – as often as your dentist recommends.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage adults and children across the UK to follow these simple daily steps to improve their oral health not just for the duration of the campaign, but for the long term – and to have fun doing it.
The campaign is supported not just by dentists, but also by health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces are participate to help educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improve the quality of smiles all around the UK.
