Dental implants are an increasingly popular solution for patients with anything from a single missing tooth to those who have lost an entire arch. They offer an opportunity to regain your smile with long lasting replacement teeth that look and feel natural.
As well as the aesthetic benefits, dental implants can help to restore the strength and stability of your jaw, preventing other problems associated with missing teeth including a receding jaw, one of the most common causes of the appearance of early aging. One of the most attractive aspects of dental implants is that they are suitable for almost anybody, regardless of how many teeth you may be missing and the condition of your remaining teeth. But how much does this popular treatment cost? Let’s take a closer look.
What does a dental implant consist of?
Many adverts for dental implants describe them as a small metal screw that acts as a replacement root. Whilst this is one of the main components, dental implants actually consist of three parts that work together – the implant, the abutment and the crown.
The implant is a replacement root, made from biocompatible titanium. This material has the unique property of being able to bond with bone, meaning that once it has fully fused it is just as strong as the root of a healthy tooth, giving your replacement tooth or teeth the strongest possible foundation and helping to restore the strength in your jaw.
On top of this new root, a crown is fitted. This is a permanent replacement tooth that is shaped and coloured to blend in with your other teeth to look and feel as natural as possible.
Connecting these two parts together is the abutment. Patients will often have a temporary abutment fitted while the healing takes place to help protect the implant. This will be painlessly replaced with a permanent abutment once healing is complete and you are ready for your crown to be fitted.
When considering the price of dental implants, it is important to make sure that you are being quoted for the entire replacement tooth to be fitted and not just the implant – it has been known for some less reputable advertisers not to be forthcoming about the total costs of having teeth replaced. It is also important to make sure that the total price includes all the required appointments.
What dental appointments will I require?
As with any kind of dental procedure, you will require some dental visits to complete your dental implant treatment. Here at Adrian Mullish Dental Care, we always begin with a free consultation with our highly experienced, Harvard educated implantologist Dr. Adrian Mullish. Adrian will take this opportunity to have a friendly, no obligation chat with you to make sure that implants are the right choice for you and make sure that you have the opportunity to get answers to any questions you may have.
If, like the vast majority of our patients, you decide that you wish to proceed, we will arrange for a full consultation and examination. During this appointment, Adrian will make sure that everything is in order and that any issues that might be a problem can be addressed before treatment begins.
Depending on any pretreatment required and the number of implants to be fitted, you will typically need between one to three further appointments to complete the treatment. Remember that although dental implant treatment is completely painless, it is a minor surgical procedure and therefore every patient is unique. For this reason, the total cost of treatment can vary.
Your consultation will give you the opportunity to agree the treatment plan and total cost of your treatment.
